Our Favorite Travel Destinations in Latin America

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re sharing some of our favorite Latin American destinations and what makes these south-of-the-border gems so special.

EcuadorThe capital of the country, Quito’s beautiful architecture, including stunning colonial churches, make it a great place to start your adventure. Once there, catching a flight to Galapagos allows you to see some of the most incredible species and wildlife on the planet.

ArgentinaThe birthplace of the tango, Buenos Aires is as romantic as it is beautiful. Although you could easily spend a lifetime exploring Argentina’s capital, heading to Mendoza is worth the trip, especially if you love Malbec wine. Bariloche is another Argentinean treasure, a cool town in the Andes that is known for its snowboarding (and chocolate).

Costa RicaAlthough small, this Central American country has volcanoes, beach, desert, and some of the best birdwatching in the world. If you’re up for adventure in a super laid-back, friendly country, then Costa Rica is your place.

ColombiaOnce avoided by tourists, Colombia is having a rebirth and is attracting more and more people looking for culture, great food, and beautiful views. Both Bogota and Cartagena are lovely places to make your hub when visiting the country.

MexicoStart your Mexican travels in Mexico City (for both the convenience and food) and then head to Chichen Itza for a once in a lifetime up-close look at Mayan ruins.

PeruWhen you think of Peru, you think of Machu Picchu, which is why Cusco is the most popular destination in the country. But, Peru’s Arequipa (the colonial-era capital) has a lot to offer, too. (Be sure to stop by the Plaza de Armas on your way to lunch.)

PatagoniaShared by Argentina and Chile, the region known as Patagonia makes up the southern-most tip of South America. The vast vistas beg for contemplation while the enormous peaks will make you question if life lived without adventure is worth living at all.

BoliviaKnown as Salar de Uyuni, the salt flats in Bolivia will redefine the way you think about the Andes. And, unexpectedly, you’ll find yourself capturing pictures of pink flamingos amid the reflective surfaces.

ChileThe capital of Chile, Santiago has been lovingly restored and refreshed over the past decade. New hotels and five-star restaurants make this South American city an up-and-coming destination when it comes to luxury travel.

UruguayA short boat ride (or even faster plane ride) from Buenos Aires, Montevideo’s rustic streets and buildings will give you plenty to explore. And, when you’re ready for beach, few places in the world are as beautiful (and unknown) as Punta del Este. For even more remote, isolated beaches, head to Jose Ignacio (a popular hangout for the world’s elites, including Elon Musk).
