2019 is the 75th Anniversary of D-Day – Here is the Best Way to Commemorate It

June 6, 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of one of history’s most important battles, D-Day at Normandy, France. Operation Overlord, which was the largest amphibious invasion to date, was the turning point in World War II, and perhaps one of the most pivotal moments ever in world history. For some, this event may seem like just another page out of a history book, but for others, some of which are still living today, this battle is part of their history, too. Nearly 10,000 Allied Forces were killed on D-Day, with estimates of American casualties at 6,603.

In honor of the 75th anniversary, Normandy is preparing several events and tours for 2019. If you are planning on visiting France next year for this special occasion, there will be plenty to do, including visiting memorial museums and watching many incredible reenactments, complete with airdrops, that take place on Normandy’s beaches. Additionally, the town of Normandy is planning special parades and firework displays around key battle sites, something that everyone, including your children, will enjoy.

But perhaps the best way to plan a trip to Normandy next year is to book a river cruise. I sailed on AmaWaterways last year along the Rhine River and highly recommend their company because of their high level service, luxurious accomdations, gourmet food, truly all-inclusive pricing, and their wonderful itineraries. AmaWaterways offers great Normandy itineraries. These are seven-night cruises that start and end in Paris. This luxury vacation will arrive on the beaches of Normandy on the fourth day, providing guests an opportunity to visit the cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach, the artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer and the village of Arromanches, where you can still see the remains of the floating harbor used during the WWII landings. En route to Normandy your cruise will stop in Les Andelys and Le Havre. Post Normandy, you will get to enjoy the medieval sights of Rouen and the breathtaking gardens in Vernon, the same made famous by Monet.

I can think of no better way for a multi-generational group or family to see the sights around Normandy than via river cruise! You unpack once, see multiple sights, eat delicious food, and have many options for tours and activities at each stop.

Here are some ideas for you to consider:

Do you have a WWII or D-Day veteran in your family? How special would it be to take him or her along with the younger generations of your family back to see the hallowed grounds of Omaha Beach together? (With a river a cruise, it is so much easier for those with mobility challenges to get around as well.) While taking this trip, your family can help a deserving veteran’s charity by working with Kinship Vacations to guarantee a portion of the revenue towards that organization.
