How much of America have you seen? I am only missing two states: Rhode Island and Alaska. There is so much to discover in this large and beautiful country; I encourage everyone to make it a goal to go somewhere new in America once per year. That is the goal I’ve set for myself.
Every time my husband gets reassigned to a new duty station for the Army, we make it a point to turn our move into a fun road trip. Three years ago, while I was 6-7 months pregnant, with one German Shepherd/ Labrador mix in tow we took the most inefficient route from the Washington, D.C. area to move to Miami, FL.

Another mega road trip in 2011 during our move from Tacoma, WA to Washington, D.C.

D.C. → Upstate NY → Chicago → Laramie, WY → Grand Tetons & Yellowstone National Park, WY/ MT → Philipsburg, MT → San Jose, CA → Palmdale, CA → Flagstaff/ Grand Canyon National Park, AZ → Phoenix, AZ → San Antonio, TX → Miami, FL (*with many bathroom, meal, and Roadside attraction stops along the way)
During this trip, we visited family and friends and made sure to mix some fun touristy activities along the way. For example, we stopped at the Lucy Desi Center for Comedy in Jamestown, NY, we met my best friend for Chicago deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s, stayed for a few days in the Grand Teton/ Yellowstone National Park area to enjoy the unparalleled views of the Teton ridges and to see Old Faithful, faithfully erupt.

By the end of our month-long trip, we were tired and I was more pregnant.

While this month-long trip was an incredibly inefficient way to move from Arlington, VA to Miami, FL, it allowed my husband and I to explore the vast beauties of these United States and see family and friends along the way. It also allowed my husband and I to spend a lot, I mean A LOT of quality time with each other. Some couples may cringe at the thought, but we really enjoyed it and we often look back on that time with sincere nostalgia.
Why do I bring all this up now? Well, friends, we are about to embark on the Great Americana Road Trip of 2016. How will this work, you ask? Probably in a Beverly Hillbillies sort of way, because this time we will have an additional two beings with us: we added another big dog and a 2.5-year-old girl. Aside from the likely theatrics that three humans and two canines will bring, here is our itinerary.

Part I (Florida to Montana) July 29-August 08, 2016

Part II (a whole lot of the Treasure State, or the “Last Best Place”, or simply, Montana) August 08 – 26, 2016

Part II (Montana to Virginia) August 27-31, 2016
